Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library
By Meysa Khadizah
Menteng, Central Jakarta · Currently Under Renovation
If you are interested in German culture, the Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library is a calm place to read and explore something new.
Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library is part of Goethe-Institut Indonesia, Germany's official cultural institute. Located on Jl. Sam Ratulangi in the Gondangdia area of Menteng, Central Jakarta, the library sits within the same building as the institute's language courses, examination center, and cultural programs, making it part of a much larger ecosystem of German-Indonesian cultural exchange.
For more than six decades, the Goethe-Institut in Indonesia has actively fostered understanding of German culture and language. Beyond language courses and examinations, the institute provides teacher training, cultural programming, and a library that offers both physical and digital resources.
The library is part of this cultural mission. It helps connect visitors through its language, literature, ideas, and cultural development. The library supports visitors who are learning German, interested in German culture, or looking for cultural and educational resources.
During the renovation period, the physical library space is temporarily closed until further notice. However, Goethe-Institut Jakarta still supports its visitors through online language courses, selected events, digital library resources, and a media pickup service. This shows that the library continues to serve its members even when the building cannot be used as usual.
Space Area
Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library feels calm and warm. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere feels different from the streets outside. The wooden furniture, neat bookshelves, and soft lighting make the library feel cozy and comfortable.
The first area you will see is the reception and German Learning Collection. This section works as the starting point before visitors move further into the main library area.
The reception desk is used for basic library services, such as asking for information, membership assistance, borrowing rules, and directions to other facilities. Its position near the entrance makes it easy for first-time visitors to understand where to go next.
Reception & German Learning Collection
The German Learning Collection is placed close to this front area, so language-related materials can be found easily. This layout is useful for visitors who come for German courses, exam preparation, or independent study.
This section connects the entrance with the rest of the library. After passing this area, visitors can continue to the main reading corner, Mini Kino, Gaming Lounge, or other facilities inside the library.
Main Library & Reading Corner
The main library area is the central reading space of Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library. Bookshelves are arranged around the room, with reading tables and seating areas placed to support different activities inside the library.
The reading corner gives visitors a comfortable place to sit after browsing the shelves. The furniture is simple and practical, making the area suitable for reading, studying, or spending quiet time with the materials available in the library.
The space is not very large, but it is arranged in a clear and organized way. Visitors can move easily between the shelves, tables, and seating area without feeling confused by the layout.
This area also connects with the other parts of the library, such as the reception area, Mini Kino, and Gaming Lounge. Because of this, visitors can move from reading activities to other cultural or media facilities without leaving the library space.
Gaming Lounge
One of the most unique parts of Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library is the Gaming Lounge. This area adds a more interactive side to the library, especially for visitors who want to explore digital media and entertainment.
The lounge provides several gaming facilities, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Wii, Meta Quest, Oculus Go, and HTC Vive Pro.
To use the Gaming Lounge, visitors need to book a session in advance through WhatsApp. Each session can be used for up to two hours, so the facility can be shared more fairly with other visitors.
This area is popular with younger visitors. It shows that the library is not only designed for reading, but also for interactive learning, media exploration, and entertainment.
Mini Kino
Near the main reading area, there is a small cinema space called Mini Kino. This room gives the library an additional media space for visitors who want to watch German films inside the library.
The size of the room makes it suitable for a more private and focused viewing experience. It is different from a large auditorium because the space feels more compact and simple.
Mini Kino is used for watching German films, including titles that may not be available on regular streaming platforms. Members can also borrow DVDs from different genres to watch at home.
This facility adds another function to the library. Besides reading and studying, visitors can also experience German culture through film and audiovisual media.
Library of Things
The Library of Things is one of the most interesting features at Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library. This area introduces a different kind of library service because it allows members to borrow useful items, not only books or media.
The items may include household tools, lifestyle objects, and other practical equipment that visitors can use temporarily. This makes the section useful for people who need certain items but do not want to buy them.
As a space, the Library of Things adds a more practical function to the library. It shows how a library can support daily needs, sharing habits, and sustainable use of resources.
This concept is still quite unusual for a library in Jakarta. Because of that, the Library of Things becomes one of the facilities that makes Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library feel different and memorable.
HOW IT FEELS TO SPEND TIME HERE
Spending time at the Goethe-Institut Jakarta Library feels quiet, warm, and unhurried. Even though it is located in Menteng, the library feels separated from the noise of the city. It is the kind of place that makes you enjoy the space more calmly.
In the Morning
In the morning, the library feels quiet and focused. The number of visitors is usually lower, so it is easier to choose a seat, browse the shelves, or study without many distractions. This time is suitable for visitors who want to read, prepare for German language exams, or spend time in a calm environment.
In the Afternoon
In the afternoon, the library can feel slightly more active. More visitors may come for language courses, library services, or casual reading. The space still feels comfortable, but there is more movement around the reception, reading corner, and other facilities.
During Programs or Film Sessions
When there are film screenings, cultural programs, or scheduled activities, the library feels more lively. Visitors may come not only to read, but also to join events, watch films, or use interactive facilities. Even with more activity, the space still keeps its warm and friendly.
